Director Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap, urges caution regarding Flamengo’s stadium project, citing billions in costs and sporting priorities that keep the club tied to the Maracanã.

The construction of a stadium remains one of the most debated topics behind the scenes at Flamengo. This time, Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap, has presented a conservative perspective on the project’s timeline.

Speaking on the Market Makers podcast, the director pondered the immediate financial viability, highlighting the challenges of making such a significant investment.

For Bap, the institution’s top priority must remain professional football. According to the president, maintaining a high-caliber team is what ensures the recurring revenue necessary for the financial health of the Rubro-Negro (Red-and-Black).

With a concession contract that still guarantees the club the use of the Maracanã for over 18 years, the need to accelerate the new arena is, in his view, not an absolute urgency.

Financial Challenges and the Maracanã Issue

The arena project on the Gasômetro land, acquired by Rodolfo Landim‘s administration in 2024 for over R$138 million, is seen as a historic step.

However, Bap points out that the total construction cost could reach R$3 billion. According to his projections, accumulating the necessary capital to fund this amount without compromising the squad would take about two decades.

Regarding plans to increase the Maracanã‘s capacity, the director also adopted a grounded stance.

Bap stated:

“Honestly, I think it’s unlikely I’ll be able to go from 76 to 80,000 people. I think maybe my children will see that. I don’t know if I will.”

The director refuted the idea that complex structural renovations to the current stadium would be simple to execute.

Strategic Vision for the Future

Although the Gasômetro land has significant expansion potential, reaching up to 104,000 square meters, the consensus among experts is that Flamengo should act with prudence.

The M360 Team highlights that, despite the fans’ optimism about the own arena project, the club prioritizes stability.

The symbiotic relationship between the team and the Maracanã seems to shield the club from hasty moves. For the M360 Team, the current scenario indicates that, while the dream of owning a stadium is real, it will be built under rigorous risk management.

The club does not intend to give up the competitiveness that places Flamengo at the top of South American football. The future of infrastructure will be defined by the balance between the asset dream and cash flow reality.
