Experienced defender Andrei Girotto has revealed that he was very close to joining Flamengo in 2022, but resistance from Nantes prevented the deal.
The transfer market often features behind-the-scenes stories that only come to light years later. That is exactly what happened with defender Andrei Girotto, who had a notable stint at Palmeiras, as he opened up about a failed negotiation with Flamengo in early 2022.
In a recent interview with the portal 365Scores, the athlete recalled the Rio de Janeiro club’s strong interest during a time when he was performing at a high level in Europe. However, a refusal from the Nantes board ultimately frustrated the plans of the Rubro-Negro and the player’s own wishes.
Behind the scenes of the Flamengo approach
Flamengo‘s attempt to sign the player took place in February 2022, driven by Portuguese manager Paulo Sousa. The coach was well-acquainted with the versatile style of the Brazilian, who played both as a defensive midfielder and as a makeshift center-back, and requested his signing from the Rio club’s football management, led at the time by Marcos Braz and Bruno Spindel.
However, the refusal from the French club was the deciding factor. Since the transfer window in France had already closed, the French directors determined that his departure would compromise the remainder of the season, especially with the team focused on the campaign that culminated in the Coupe de France title.

With recent inquiries from Brazilian teams hitting hurdles due to market bureaucracy, the player does not hide his desire to return in the future. While he seeks to help Al Faisaly establish itself in the Saudi Pro League, the veteran continues to follow the national scene closely for a potential homecoming.
