Flamengo icon Junior did not hold back his criticism of football director José Boto, questioning his demeanor and the effectiveness of the club’s recent moves in the transfer market.
The atmosphere at Flamengo has once again become the subject of heated debate in the sports media. During Tuesday’s (04) edition of the show ‘Seleção SporTV‘, former player and legendary club figure Junior fired sharp criticism at the work of José Boto, the current football director for the red-and-black squad.
The Maestro’s dissatisfaction centers primarily on how the Portuguese executive has handled negotiations. According to Junior, the director’s attitude lacks humility, and the practical results of the signings made under his leadership remain questionable.
Criticism of management and rhetoric
The former player challenged the director’s past statements, especially regarding the tenure of head coach Filipe Luís. For the club icon, the credit for the coach’s continuation belongs solely to his own work, rather than any supposed persuasive ability of the director.
Junior stated:
I’m biased when speaking about this gentleman, because when he arrived at Flamengo, he claimed he was the one who convinced Filipe Luís to stay. Lies! What kept the coach here was his own work. And if you look at the signings he made, I have my doubts as to whether they were truly beneficial.
The Maestro went further, revealing that he had consulted football agents in Europe who claimed to have no knowledge of Boto’s background, reinforcing the climate of distrust regarding the professional’s experience.
The ‘Almada Saga’ context
The controversy gained traction following an interview with José Boto at Galeão Airport upon his return from Argentina. While commenting on the negotiations for Thiago Almada, the director avoided a diplomatic tone, which some interpreted as arrogance.
The director remarked:
The reason for my trip to Argentina wasn’t to convince Almada, because it would be stupid of Almada if I had to go there to convince him. He played here for six months and knows the stature of Flamengo.
The club, however, is in a race against time. With negotiations stalled due to competition from River Plate (ARG), the board is looking to finalize the signing of Thiago Almada as soon as possible, aiming to register the midfielder for the decisive round of 16 clash against Cruzeiro in the Libertadores.
