Pirlo rebuts criticism, defends Russian betting partnership amid Italy coaching rumors.

The looming appointment of Andrea Pirlo as the new head coach of the Italy national team is embroiled in controversy. The Italian football icon, widely expected to take charge of the Azzurri by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), has faced criticism due to a commercial partnership with a Russian betting company. The situation has ignited a fierce debate in Italy, a country that vehemently opposes Vladimir Putin‘s regime following the war in Ukraine.

With mounting pressure, Pirlo spoke out this Sunday (26) via his social media, expressing “great bitterness” over the turn of events. In a detailed statement, the former midfielder emphasized that his collaboration with the Russian company, for which he serves as an ambassador, is strictly commercial and sports-related, having been established while he was working in the United Arab Emirates.

Pirlo’s Defense: Commercial and Sports Collaboration

“Throughout my career—first as a player and now as a coach—I have always conducted my work in full compliance with the laws of the countries where I operated and with the contracts I signed,” Pirlo stated.

He emphasized that attributing a political dimension to his professional collaboration would distort his true intentions and opinions. The coach lamented that a technical decision has been dragged into the political arena, creating implications that do not align with his identity.

Impasse with FIGC

Pirlo‘s connection with the Russian company, whose owner also controls United FC—a UAE-based club he coaches—has put the FIGC in a difficult position. Italian media reports suggest the federation is re-evaluating the potential hiring, aiming for complete legal certainty and seeking to avoid any future embarrassment. Pirlo‘s representatives have already stated that the coach would face no legal obstacles in terminating his agreement with the betting company, which would make his appointment more feasible. Nevertheless, the FIGC‘s final decision is still pending, with the assessment of contractual conditions being a crucial factor.

Pirlo‘s passion for Italy, as he himself underscored, transcends a specific role and is deeply intertwined with his personal history. It remains to be seen whether off-field issues will allow this story to continue with him at the helm of the national team—a dream for any Italian. The future of the Azzurri under the leadership of this golden generation star now hinges on a meticulous review by the FIGC.
