The Royal Belgian Football Association has officially named Mark van Bommel as the new manager of the Red Devils. The coach arrives on a contract through 2028 to redefine the team’s identity.

The Belgian national team is embarking on a new chapter in its history. This Friday, July 24, 2026, the RBFA confirmed the signing of Dutch coach Mark van Bommel. The manager, who boasts significant stints with giants such as PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg, and Belgian club Royal Antwerp, takes on the commitment to lead the country through the Euro 2028 tournament.

Van Bommel‘s arrival, at 49 years old, marks the end of the era under Frenchman Rudi Garcia. His predecessor stepped down following the team’s elimination in the quarterfinals of the World Cup against Spain. The atmosphere behind the scenes was already strained, with the coach struggling with dressing room dynamics and public tensions with technical director Vincent Vannaert, who had questioned the team’s performance level since the start of the World Cup.

The Start of a New Philosophy

The new coach arrives with the mission to restore fan confidence and elevate the Red Devils‘ standing. Known for his tactical rigidity and competitiveness, the Dutchman aims to transform the team’s on-field demeanor.

It is an immense honor to take the helm of the Belgian national team. I deeply believe in the talent we have at our disposal, and we will work to implement a disciplined, but above all, ambitious and winning playing philosophy.

Immediate Challenges and the Future

The coaching staff’s planning is already underway. The focus now is on preparing for the return of the UEFA Nations League. The schedule, incidentally, will offer no respite to the new manager: between the end of September and the beginning of October, Belgium will face true tests of fire against Italy, France, and Turkey.

Belgian fans, known for their “Grit, Love, and Passion,” are eagerly awaiting to see if the change in leadership will be the catalyst needed for the resurgence of national football. With a long-term cycle planned through 2028, Mark van Bommel will have the time and backing from the board to hone the squad and pursue the glory that eluded them in the last World Cup.
