Statements from Marcos Braz regarding a potential return for Gabigol have stirred the Brazilian football scene, while Cruzeiro sets strict financial demands to release the player.
The horizon for 2027 holds considerable uncertainty for forward Gabigol. Although no official negotiations are currently underway, the possibility of a return to Flamengo has resurfaced behind the scenes following public remarks from former club directors.
Currently tied to Cruzeiro and playing for Santos on loan until the end of 2026, the player continues to attract the spotlight in the transfer market.
The spark for the debate came from Marcos Braz, former vice president of football for the Rio de Janeiro club. During a recent appearance on the Fla Zoeiro channel, the executive recalled the successful strategy adopted in 2019, when the striker arrived at Gávea under similar terms.
The idea of repeating the formula generates high expectations among fans, even though the current scenario requires complex negotiations with the management in Minas Gerais.
The demands of the Celeste board
For any loan agreement to happen in 2027, Cruzeiro has already drawn a hard line. Pedro Lourenço, owner of the club’s SAF, made it clear that future temporary transfers will only happen if the interested party covers the player’s wages in full.
Currently, the salary costs are split with Santos, but Cruzeiro’s hierarchy shows no openness to new expense-sharing deals.
Marcos Braz stated:
If it were under those conditions, a one-year loan, yes. It was the same operation as in 2019… Having a Gabigol available to fight for a position, to be part of the squad, I think that is important.
With a contract valid with Raposa until December 2028, Gabigol will need to define his next steps carefully. If interested clubs fail to meet the financial demands imposed by the Minas Gerais side, the player will have to report back to Belo Horizonte at the start of next season, fulfilling his established contract.
Santos’ interest and the player’s desire
While the contractual situation remains murky, Santos makes no secret of its enthusiasm to extend the striker’s stay at Vila Belmiro. However, the Santos board is awaiting the outcome of the presidential election scheduled for December before formalizing any definitive talks with Cruzeiro officials, prioritizing administrative stability.
Between the white lines, the forward’s performance sustains his high rating in the domestic market. With an impressive goalscoring record in the Brazilian Serie A, the player remains decisive and valued.
At the same time, the player himself has publicly expressed the affection and connection he built with the red-and-black jersey during his glory years in Rio de Janeiro.
The next chapter of this saga takes place on the pitch, with a direct clash between Santos and Flamengo at Vila Belmiro for the twenty-ninth round of the national tournament.
Once the ball rolls, the goalscorer’s future will remain tied to Cruzeiro‘s strategic decisions, the financial health of interested parties, and the player’s personal choices for the remainder of his career.
