The sports betting market is facing a regulatory blackout in Brazil, with websites going offline this Tuesday and clubs like Flamengo feeling the immediate impact on revenues.
The landscape of Brazilian football and digital entertainment dawned transformed this Tuesday, October 6. With the expiration of the deadline set by Provisional Measure (MP) No. 1,394/2026, online betting platforms have ceased operations in the country.
The absence of a favorable ruling by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) forced the immediate blocking of services, triggering a domino effect that impacts everyone from regular players to major sports institutions.
The impact is clearly felt on the pitch. Flamengo, which takes the field this coming Thursday, October 8, to face Santos for the 29th round of the Brazilian Serie A, will take to the pitch wearing a jersey without Betano‘s brand.
The club has already begun preparations with tape covering the main sponsor’s logo, highlighting the legal instability that has taken over the betting sector.
Financial impact and legal offensive
Concern behind the scenes at the red-and-black club is palpable. The contract with the betting company runs through December 2028, but the current scenario puts an estimated amount between R$ 400 million and R$ 430 million at risk for 2027 alone.
Considering the entire Serie A, sponsorship deals with the betting segment total figures close to R$ 1 billion, an amount now under heavy threat of suspension.
Given this scenario, the board of the Rio de Janeiro club approached the STF as an amicus curiae in ADI No. 8,027, a proceeding under the rapporteurship of Justice Luiz Fux.
The strategy aims to seek legal alternatives that can reverse the ban or, at least, mitigate the accumulated damage.
The club stated:
“The partnership with Betano remains in place, reaffirming our commitment to the current contract, while we await a concrete definition from the higher courts to resume normal promotional activities.”
Timeline for balance refunds
For users who have funds retained on the platforms, the withdrawal schedule has been established. The period for voluntary withdrawals ended on Monday, October 5.
Now, the process moves to the technical stage: between this Wednesday (7) and Thursday (8), operators must forward the database with balances by CPF to the banks.
The financial refund will be processed by banking institutions between October 9 and 14. Unclaimed funds will be transferred to a specific account at Caixa Econômica Federal after October 14.
The future of online betting
The blocking of websites, carried out through joint action by providers and the Internet Management Committee, redirects users to the official portal brasilsembets.gov.br, which offers guidance on refunds.
However, the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) maintains a critical stance, advising its members not to comply with the redirection.
The outcome of this story is still uncertain. Justice Luiz Fux may issue a decision at any time, and the National Congress is preparing to review the MP through a joint committee, with urgent status scheduled only for November 9.
Meanwhile, the federal government maintains its firm position, arguing that the ban—which also covers virtual casinos—is an essential measure to curb household debt and contain the growth of gambling addiction in the country.
