Estudiantes is facing a wave of significant absences and is a cause for concern ahead of the Copa Libertadores semifinal against Flamengo after losing key players.

Estudiantes‘ preparation for the Copa Libertadores semifinal suffered a dramatic setback in their last match. During the Supercopa Internacional final, which they lost 3-1 to Rosario Central, the Argentine club saw three important players leave the field injured, raising a red flag for the decisive clash against Flamengo, scheduled for next month.

The first blow came just 18 minutes into the first half when midfielder Gabriel Neves took a hard fall and had to be taken directly to the hospital. Tests confirmed a fracture in the Uruguayan’s left wrist, and he is expected to be sidelined for about three months, making his participation in the continental competition completely out of the question.

New Absences and Search for Reinforcements

The squad’s physical situation worsened when new signing Jalil Elías, who replaced Gabriel Neves, also felt muscle pain and left the field. The midfielder is suspected of having a left thigh injury and is now doubtful for the first leg match. In addition to them, veteran forward Guido Carrillo requested a substitution in the second half due to muscle problems, increasing the list of concerns for coach Cacique Medina.

Faced with this critical scenario, the club’s board is discussing the arrival of specific reinforcements. As the transfer window is closed in South America, the alternative is to seek free agents or rely on Conmebol‘s rule, which allows for up to three changes to the registered list for the Libertadores semifinal, meaning a potential new signing could play.

Rubro-Negro’s Medical Department Situation

On the Brazilian side, Rubro-Negro is also monitoring its infirmary and planning for the decisive duels. The first match is scheduled for October 15th at the Estádio Jorge Luis Hirschi, while the return leg will take place on October 22nd at the Maracanã.

While Flamengo tries to get full-back Ayrton Lucas and forward Plata physically ready before the clash, midfielder Evertton Araújo remains a confirmed absence.
