Crisis at the top of world football deepens as AFC formally rejects FIFA project, creating a majority against the initiative led by Gianni Infantino.
The political landscape at the helm of global football reached a boiling point this Friday (31). The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) officially announced its decision to reject FIFA’s proposal to create the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a subsidiary that would allow private investors to acquire 20% of the World Cup‘s commercial rights.
With this endorsement, opposition to the project spearheaded by Gianni Infantino solidifies a significant majority among continental confederations. The move places the sport’s governing body in a position of strategic isolation, following months of negotiations that, according to dissenting entities, were marred by severe failures in transparency and dialogue.
Union of continental powers
The decision by the AFC—representing 46 member associations of the sport’s governing body—adds to the boycott already announced by UEFA and the rejection from CONCACAF. Together, the opposing blocs total 136 votes, signaling widespread resistance to the proposed business model.
In an official statement, the Asian confederation was emphatic in criticizing FIFA’s management methods:
“In light of the position expressed by UEFA and CONCACAF, in addition to the unprecedented divisions that have emerged within the world of football, the AFC considers that the proposed FFE cannot realistically achieve the broad consensus and unity necessary to move forward.”
Governance under fire
Beyond the financial rejection, the AFC pointed to structural problems in the current Swiss administration. The confederation advocates for an urgent review of the organization’s governance, arguing that the current consultation process has created a damaging disconnect between FIFA officials and the federations that make up the sport.
Regarding the strategic importance of the issue, the confederation stated:
“A proposal of this magnitude, likely to influence the commercial, sporting, and strategic future of world football, should not proceed after a process that could give the impression of alienating confederations, member federations, and even senior FIFA officials.”
Future of negotiations
While UEFA has already pledged to boycott future competitions under FIFA’s auspices if the plan moves forward, attention now turns to CONMEBOL and CAF (Africa). The South American confederation, so far, remains cautiously silent, being the only major confederation not to have publicly stated its position.
The impact of this collective resistance throws the future of the FIFA Forward Enterprise project into question, forcing the entity’s leadership to seek alternatives or face a historic rift.
