Guardiola Says ‘No’ to Italy; Pirlo Becomes FIGC’s Main Target

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) suffered a major setback in its search for a new head coach. According to the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pep Guardiola rejected the invitation to manage the Italy national team. The news, confirmed last night, positions Andrea Pirlo as the leading candidate to fill the vacant role.

Guardiola Prioritizes Family Time

Guardiola’s decision, according to the Italian outlet, was not taken lightly. The Spanish coach reportedly informed Paolo Maldini, the FIGC’s national team director, that despite being honored by the offer, he does not currently feel ready to return to coaching a team. After an intense period at Manchester City, Guardiola opted for a sabbatical, seeking to prioritize time with his family and reflect on the next steps of his career. The FIGC board, aware of the coach’s intentions, offered a long-term contract, with plans for eight to ten years, but not even the solidity of the proposal was enough to change Guardiola’s decision.

Pirlo, the Plan B with Innovative Potential

With Guardiola’s refusal, the Italian federation’s focus now shifts to Andrea Pirlo. The choice of the former Azzurra star is seen by figures like Maldini and Leonardo, a consultant for the national team, as a bet on an innovative profile capable of implementing a new playing philosophy. Pirlo, who was part of Italy’s victorious 2006 World Cup campaign, had already shown potential as a coach during his stints at Juventus, Karagümrük, and Sampdoria, in addition to his current management role at United FC in the United Arab Emirates. The FIGC believes that Pirlo could be the key to rebuilding the Italian national team on the world stage.
