Grupo Globo officially confirms its return to broadcasting the Copa Libertadores on pay-TV starting in 2027, securing the rights to air approximately 70 matches annually on SporTV.
Brazil’s largest broadcaster has solidified an important strategic move by securing the second package of broadcasting rights for South America’s premier club competition. The agreement, covering the 2027-2030 cycle, positions SporTV once again as a key platform for the continental tournament, following a multi-year absence.
This development occurs amidst a restructuring landscape in the sports media market. With Paramount facing operational challenges and merger processes, Globo seized the opportunity to strengthen its inventory and directly counter the competition from ESPN, which has become a dominant force on pay-TV in recent years.
Strategic Return to SporTV
The contract marks a significant shift in the television landscape. Since the previous deal was terminated in 2020 due to the pandemic’s financial impact, Globo‘s sports channel had lost ground in its Libertadores coverage. Now, the broadcaster regains control over a substantial portion of the broadcasts, rebalancing the competitive playing field.
As reported by the M360 Team, the new rights arrangement reflects a pursuit of exclusivity and comprehensive coverage. By holding the free-to-air rights via TV Globo, digital rights through Ge, and now pay-TV rights, the conglomerate re-establishes itself as the central hub for South American football in Brazil.
Market Division and Next Steps
Starting in 2027, the Brazilian market will see a shared rights scenario. While Grupo Globo takes on the package of approximately 70 games on SporTV, Disney maintains its presence with ESPN, which holds the first package with 81 matches. The fragmentation, which previously caused viewer confusion, appears to be gaining clearer contours for the upcoming cycle.
“The move not only restores the channel’s prestige but also shields the group’s audience from constant migration to competing platforms,” emphasizes the M360 Team regarding the business’s commercial importance.
The impact of this negotiation is expected to be directly felt in SporTV‘s programming schedule, as it once again becomes a must-watch destination for fans of international and continental football. Formalizing the contract with Conmebol is the final step before this new chapter begins, promising to further intensify the competition for viewership in Brazilian sports broadcasts.
