Libertadores: Brazilians take the lead in quarter-final first legs, Corinthians draws.
The Copa Libertadores has already seen the first leg results of the quarter-finals decided. Brazilian clubs showed their strength, with three of them securing victories that put them in a good position to advance to the semifinals.
The exception was Corinthians, who managed a draw away from home. The race for a spot among the top four in South America is heating up the continental competition.
Brazilian advantages and the Corinthians challenge
The first leg matches presented scores that paint distinct scenarios for the return games. Flamengo, in a remarkable performance, overcame the challenging altitude of Quito by defeating Independiente del Valle 2-0.
Fluminense also made their home advantage count, defeating Platense 2-0. Meanwhile, Palmeiras secured a slim, but crucial, 1-0 victory over LDU.
The only Brazilian representative not to secure a win was Corinthians, who drew 1-1 with Estudiantes in Argentina.
Paths to the semifinals
In Rio de Janeiro, Fluminense built their advantage with goals from Nonato and Hulk against Platense. The ‘Tricolor’ team now prepares for the decisive clash in Argentina on August 15.
In São Paulo, Palmeiras relied on a goal from Giay to overcome LDU. The ‘Verdão’ team, with a minimal advantage, can play for a draw in Ecuador on August 16.
Corinthians, on the other hand, drew with Estudiantes in a match where Kaio César scored for ‘Timão’. The decision for a semifinal spot is now set for the Neo Química Arena in São Paulo, also on August 16.
The open aggregate score requires maximum attention from the São Paulo club to turn the situation around at home.
Flamengo‘s victory over Independiente del Valle was celebrated by their fans. Bruno Henrique and Léo Pereira were the goalscorers who gave Rubro-Negro the win in Quito.
The second and decisive match will take place at the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro on August 17.
Next steps in the Libertadores
With the first leg matches of the quarter-finals concluded, the focus shifts to the return games. The Libertadores semifinals are scheduled to take place between October 13 and 15.
The second leg matches will occur between October 20 and 22. The grand final of the season is scheduled for November 28, crowning the South American champion.
The performance of the Brazilian clubs in this phase is an indicator of each team’s potential to compete for the continent’s most coveted title.
