A wrist injury sidelines Arrascaeta from crucial Flamengo matches, including the decisive stage of the Libertadores.
Flamengo fans received concerning news: star player Arrascaeta will be sidelined for a significant period, impacting the club’s season finale.
The Uruguayan suffered a fracture in his left wrist during a friendly match for the Uruguay national team in the last FIFA break, an incident that, despite not involving a direct challenge for the ball, forced him to brace his fall with his hand.
The No. 10 had already been showcasing his quality on the field, with an assist and a goal even before the incident.
The fall, however, was enough to diagnose the fracture, which will require surgical intervention and, consequently, a long recovery process, ruling him out of decisive matches.
The Incident and Diagnosis
The injury occurred during the match between Uruguay and South Korea.
Arrascaeta slipped unassisted and, in an attempt to brace his fall, placed his left hand on the grass.
He was immediately substituted, and subsequent examinations confirmed the severity: a wrist fracture.
Surgery Required and Absence
The severity of the fracture necessitates surgery. The medical intervention aims to stabilize the bone with plates or screws.
However, this very need for bone repair prevents the practice of contact sports.
Any impact on the operated area could compromise the success of the surgery and require further interventions.
Even though outfield players don’t use their hands to play, the risks of falls, collisions, and loss of balance in soccer are constant.
Rules and Protections
The rules of soccer, established by the IFAB, do not explicitly prohibit a player from playing with an injured wrist.
Law 4 allows the use of protective equipment, provided it is safe and approved by the referee.
However, rigid or potentially dangerous items for opponents, such as metal splints, can be disallowed by the referee.
Projected Return and Impact on Competitions
Experts estimate a recovery period of 60 to 90 days for a Colles’ fracture, like the one suffered by Arrascaeta.
Internally, Flamengo‘s medical department projects an absence of about six weeks.
The club, which requested the player’s immediate return to Brazil for a new assessment before surgery, is working with the possibility of having him back only for a potential Libertadores final.
This means that the midfielder will certainly miss the semifinal clashes against Estudiantes, both the first leg on October 15 and the return leg on October 22.
Arrascaeta‘s absence represents a significant blow to Flamengo‘s ambitions at a crucial moment in the season, testing the squad’s depth and the team’s ability to overcome challenges in pursuit of titles.
