PSG star midfielder Vitinha has expressed enthusiasm regarding the start of Jorge Jesus’ tenure with the Portugal national team and reflected on the ‘Mister’s’ legacy at Flamengo.

The Jorge Jesus era for the Portugal national team is about to begin, and expectations among Portuguese players are running high. The manager, who left an indelible mark on South American football by winning numerous titles with Flamengo, takes charge of the national side with the mission of rejuvenating the squad without discarding the experience of veterans like Cristiano Ronaldo, now 41.

One of Portugal’s midfield pillars, PSG player Vitinha, highlighted the significance of the new head coach. In an interview with CazéTV, the athlete admitted his eagerness for his first professional encounter with the manager, acknowledging the weight of his victorious career.

Respect for the Rubro-Negro history

During the conversation, Vitinha made a point to note that Jorge Jesus’ reputation extends far beyond European borders. The midfielder emphasized that the manager’s success at Flamengo was fundamental in solidifying his standing as an elite name on the world stage.

“He is a new coach for me. I have never been coached by Jorge Jesus. He is a very well-known and respected manager in Portugal, due to the work he did in Portugal and later at Flamengo. I am looking forward to starting and seeing what happens,” the midfielder stated.

Challenges in the Nations League

Jorge Jesus’ start will be demanding. Unlike other national teams that focus on friendlies, Portugal faces an intense sequence of four Nations League matches. Between September 24 and October 4, the team will face Wales, Norway (in two legs), and Denmark.

Jorge Jesus’ arrival at the Portuguese side follows a successful stint at Al Nassr, where he also worked with Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with a contract signed through 2030, the manager is planning a complete cycle focused on the next World Cup, aiming to instill the same intensity that made him an idol among the Flamengo fanbase.
