Vasco out of Maracanã: Judicial decision prevents Cruzmaltino from playing at Rio’s sacred football temple.
Vasco da Gama had its request denied by the court to host the first leg of the Copa do Brasil quarterfinals against Vitória at the Maracanã stadium. The decision, which frustrated the Cruzmaltino’s plans, confirms that the match will take place at São Januário Stadium next Thursday (26).
The dispute arose from the joint administration of the Maracanã by the Fla-Flu consortium, which cited the need to preserve the pitch.
Maracanã Ban: Fla-Flu Cites Pitch Condition
The duo of Flamengo and Fluminense, responsible for the management of the Maracanã, vetoed Vasco‘s use of the stadium.
The main argument was the need for pitch recovery, which was reportedly in precarious condition.
According to the clubs, holding another match, especially during a crucial period for pitch maintenance, could worsen the problem and compromise playing conditions for the consortium’s own teams.
The week of August 23-29, in fact, had been previously reserved for pitch improvement work.
Legal Attempt: Vasco Seeks to Overturn Decision
In an effort to overturn the decision, Vasco SAF took the matter to the Judiciary. The club argued it had the right to host matches at the Maracanã during the 2026 season.
The case was processed in the 3rd Civil Court of the Santa Cruz Region, under the responsibility of Judge Talita Bretz Cardoso de Mello.
However, the arguments presented by Vasco SAF were not sufficient to convince the Court to override the Fla-Flu consortium’s position and the pitch maintenance needs.
Next Steps: Focus on Copa do Brasil and Maracanã’s Rest
With São Januário confirmed as the venue, Vasco is focusing on preparing its team for the challenging duel against Vitória in the Copa do Brasil.
Meanwhile, the Maracanã will have a period of rest for its pitch. The next engagement at the stadium will be the classic match between Flamengo and Botafogo on Sunday (30), valid for the 25th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro. The match will be broadcast live by Rede Globo on free-to-air TV.
