Amid ongoing conflicts with FIFA, UEFA is weighing a potential boycott against Gianni Infantino, which could see European clubs withdraw from the federation’s tournaments, including the Club World Cup.

The relationship between UEFA and FIFA president Gianni Infantino is currently at an all-time low.

According to reports from TalkSport, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin is coordinating a potential boycott that could drastically reshape the global football landscape.

The plan under discussion involves pulling European teams from competitions organized by the international federation.

The direct impact of such a measure would be felt in the FIFA Club World Cup. The tournament, which held its inaugural edition in 2025, risks losing the participation of top European clubs, which would severely diminish the competition’s commercial and technical appeal.

Political maneuvering and the role of the ECA

To move forward with this plan, Ceferin is seeking crucial support from the ECA (European Club Association).

The strategy includes a decisive meeting scheduled for August 12, during the friendly match between PSG and Aston Villa in Austria.

However, there is a political hurdle: the association’s chairman is Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who leads the Parisian club and is considered a close ally of Infantino.

Ceferin expects difficulties in negotiations with the Paris Saint-Germain president, given that Al-Khelaifi is a right-hand man to Infantino.

A history of tension

This is not the first time UEFA has used the threat of a boycott as a pressure tactic against FIFA.

Recently, the European governing body took a firm stand after Gianni Infantino considered selling shares of the World Cup to a private company.

On that occasion, the threat to withdraw national teams from federation-organized tournaments forced the president to walk back his decision.

The atmosphere of hostility between the two institutions shows no sign of abating. With the friction between the continental federations and the FIFA presidency continuing to grow, the future of the international football calendar remains uncertain.

It is expected that further developments regarding the potential absence of European giants from the Club World Cup will dominate sports headlines in the coming weeks.
