Goalkeeper Agustín Rossi gets into a heated exchange with a fan after securing Flamengo’s spot in the Libertadores semifinals.
Flamengo punched its ticket to the Copa Libertadores semifinals this past Thursday (17), with a 1-1 draw against Independiente del Valle (ECU).
The atmosphere at the Maracanã, however, was anything but calm for much of the match.
The fan pressure for a better Rubro-Negro performance was palpable, and a curious episode marked the turning point: goalkeeper Agustín Rossi got into an argument with a fan immediately after Arrascaeta‘s goal.
The Turnaround and the Commotion
Despite the hard-fought qualification, the fans’ focus was on the team’s performance. Criticism could be heard in the stadium, a reflection of the apprehension before the goal that would change the game.
After celebrating Arrascaeta‘s goal with his teammates, Rossi, in an unexpected gesture, headed to the stands and exchanged words with a fan.
As reported by journalist Pablo Raphael, the fan in question had been vocalizing criticism of the team’s performance before the ball hit the back of the net.
The Unexpected Goal and the Goalkeeper’s Play
Ironically, goalkeeper Agustín Rossi himself was the key player in the play that resulted in the equalizing goal.
In the 38th minute of the second half, a long kick from the Flamengo goalkeeper caught the opposing defense and Independiente del Valle‘s goalkeeper Quintana by surprise.
The ball sailed over the Ecuadorian goalkeeper, and Arrascaeta only had to tap it into the back of the net. The Rubro-Negra fans erupted in delirium with the turnaround.
The Collective Error and the Response
The Ecuadorian team’s goal, scored by Reasco in the 30th minute of the first half, originated from a collective error that directly involved Léo Pereira, Ayrton Lucas, and Rossi himself.
However, Flamengo‘s ability to respond prevailed, securing the expected spot in the next phase of the continental competition.
Flamengo now prepares to face Estudiantes (ARG) in the Libertadores semifinals. The matches are scheduled for the weeks of October 14 and 21.
Thus, the first leg will take place at the Argentine team’s home, while the return leg will be at the Maracanã.
