Léo Ortiz Criticizes Maracanã Pitch, Justifies Artificial Turf After Flamengo’s Libertadores Qualification
The condition of the Maracanã pitch has become a major talking point following Flamengo‘s advancement to the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores. In a post-match interview after the 1-1 draw against Independiente del Valle (ECU), defender Léo Ortiz did not hold back in describing the field conditions, calling it “practically unplayable.”
The player emphasized that the poor state of the stadium’s natural grass strengthens the arguments of those advocating for the adoption of artificial turf on Brazilian pitches. Flamengo, which historically prioritizes natural grass quality, finds itself in a dilemma.

Despite criticizing the pitch, Léo Ortiz made a point to stress that the field’s condition should not be an excuse for the team’s performance, which he deemed below expectations in all aspects. However, concern over pitch maintenance for the remainder of the season is evident, especially with upcoming events like the NFL.
Concerns Over Calendar and Other Players
