Brazilians prefer Spain in the World Cup final; Messi seeks records against Spanish solidity

The big World Cup final is approaching, and a poll by the newspaper O Globo reveals that Brazilian fans are leaning towards an unexpected side: Spain. While Lionel Messi‘s Argentina is the favorite on the field, the majority of readers consulted by the outlet prefer to see the Spanish lift the trophy this Sunday.

National Preference: Spain Holds the Edge in Fan Support

With 1,538 votes counted, the poll showed that 73.7% of Brazilians will root for Spain in the final against Argentina. Only 26.3% expressed support for the neighbors. This preference might be surprising, considering the global appeal of stars like Messi, but it demonstrates an admiration for the Spanish team’s solid campaign.

Messi in Pursuit of More Glory and Records

On the Argentine side, hope rests on the feet of Lionel Messi. The number 10 has been a key player in Argentina‘s run, with eight goals and four assists, participating in all of the team’s goals in the tournament. In the final, besides seeking the long-awaited title, Messi aims to surpass Kylian Mbappé in the current edition’s top scorer race and in the all-time World Cup goalscorers list. The French star ended his participation with 10 goals, totaling 22 in history, while Messi has 21.

Spain: Defensive Solidity and Young Talent

Spain, on the other hand, relies on its collective strength and an almost impenetrable defense. The team has conceded only one goal throughout the entire competition, a remarkable feat. Youngster Lamine Yamal, at just 19 years old, is one of the individual standouts, showing talent that positions him as a key player for the Spanish tactical setup. Spain seeks its second world title, while Argentina, the current champion, aims for its fourth title and a consecutive second championship.

Where to Watch the Big Match

The grand final of the 2026 World Cup between Spain and Argentina will be broadcast live throughout Brazil. Fans can follow the match on TV Globo (free-to-air channel), Sportv (pay-TV channel), CazéTV (YouTube), and GeTV (Globoplay), starting at 4 PM (Brasília time). The expectation is for an exciting game, with two distinct styles and stories clashing in pursuit of football’s ultimate glory.
