Government suspends betting companies in Brazil, creating uncertainty and a projected R$400 million loss for Flamengo.

While the Rubro-Negro squad enjoyed a weekend off during the FIFA international break, the external landscape drastically transformed with the suspension of betting companies’ operations in Brazil, a measure with potential multimillion-dollar consequences for the club.
The decision by the Federal Government, announced last Friday, the 25th, by Finance Minister Dario Durigan, alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, caught the sports market by surprise. The new regulation requires betting platforms to return available funds in bettors’ accounts by October 5, at 11:59 PM (Brasília time), after which they will no longer be allowed to operate in the country.
Multimillion-Dollar Loss for Flamengo
Given the suspension of sports betting companies’ activities, a source connected to Flamengo‘s management projected a gigantic loss for the club. In an interview with ‘Metrópoles,’ the source explained the complexity of the situation:
“It’s very difficult, in the short term, for us to say what we can do, because this is a very drastic measure. I would be lying if I said we have a Plan B for this. We don’t. We never considered the possibility that existing contracts based on an absolutely legal model, approved by the National Congress, with officially and legally issued concessions, could be eliminated, let’s say, in a short period of time. So, we are apprehensive about this possibility and still have no alternative plan whatsoever. What I can say is that Flamengo is a responsible club; it entered into a long-term commitment based on legal contracts we signed with a betting company, and regarding Flamengo, the impact next year, beyond sponsorship, will be in the order of R$400 million on the club’s revenues. Because there are some indirect impacts, this alone would prevent Flamengo from honoring the commitments it made for next year. So, operating in an environment where you were absolutely within the law, this is something that causes us a lot of concern if it is indeed enforced.”
The statement highlights the lack of a contingency plan for such a drastic scenario and warns of the impossibility of honoring future financial commitments, which were based on contracts previously considered entirely legal.
Squad Enjoys FIFA International Break
While the board grapples with financial challenges, the Flamengo squad received a strategic period of rest. After a 2-1 victory over Red Bull Bragantino in the 28th round of the Brazilian Serie A last Sunday (20), the players had Monday (21) off.
The team reconvened on Tuesday (22) for intense training sessions at Ninho do Urubu. To conclude the week’s activities, coach Leonardo Jardim granted the athletes Saturday (26) and Sunday (27) off, allowing them to recover before resuming their post-FIFA break commitments.
