Léo Pereira criticizes CONMEBOL for altitude after Flamengo’s victory in the Libertadores

Despite Flamengo’s important 2-0 victory over Independiente del Valle (ECU) in the Copa Libertadores, defender Léo Pereira expressed dissatisfaction with the conditions imposed by the altitude in Quito. The Rubro-Negro defender criticized CONMEBOL for authorizing games in locations 2850 meters above sea level.

Altitude and the Difficulty in Quito

The altitude in Quito was a determining factor in the match. Flamengo felt the thin air in the first half, ending the first half without a single shot and with Independiente del Valle dominating possession.

“It’s horrible for us to play here, but these are the conditions that CONMEBOL accepts for players,” declared Léo Pereira, visibly irritated. He acknowledged the team’s difficulty in adapting but emphasized the group’s strength: “I believe they had to somehow make the altitude count. I want to thank all my teammates, because it’s really very difficult to play here.”.

Ambition and Focus on the Future

Despite the adversities, Léo Pereira highlighted the team’s winning mentality. “Today, we proved once again this team of men that is being formed, this ambition we have throughout the year. I think this is the way,” he stated. He also celebrated his goal but remained grounded: “It’s difficult to score, but when the opportunity arises, I’m always there to try something. Nothing is resolved yet, there’s still the return leg.”.

Flamengo managed to react in the second half, with goals from Bruno Henrique and Léo Pereira himself, securing an advantage for the return leg at the Maracanã. The Rio de Janeiro team can afford to lose by up to one goal to advance to the semifinals.

Concern for the Brasileirão

In addition to the altitude issue, Léo Pereira admitted to suffering from muscle pain at the end of the match. The defender’s condition raises concerns for Flamengo, who face Corinthians this Sunday (13th) in the Brazilian Championship.

Impact and Next Steps

The victory in Quito gives Flamengo a considerable advantage to advance in the Libertadores. However, Léo Pereira’s statements highlight a recurring debate about the adequacy of climatic and geographical conditions in some host cities of the continental competition. The team’s resilient attitude, even in the face of adversities such as altitude and the possibility of absences, shows the squad’s ambition to chase titles this season. The focus now shifts to the match against Corinthians in the Brasileirão, where the team will seek to maintain its momentum, despite concerns about the physical condition of some players.
