In his debut as head coach of the Portuguese National Team, Jorge Jesus bets on continuity and confirms Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence for the Nations League challenges.

The Jorge Jesus era at the helm of Portugal began with a clear message of respect for the recent past. Upon announcing his first squad list this Friday (18), the coach opted not to make drastic changes to the roster, maintaining the core group that competed in the last 2026 World Cup.

The main expectation revolved around the future of Cristiano Ronaldo. Without yielding to pressure for immediate renewal, the commander confirmed the captain among the 26 players called up for the start of the Nations League campaign.

The decision reinforces confidence in the idol’s experience to lead the group in this new work cycle following the departure of Roberto Martínez.

Core maintained and focus on chemistry

The new coach aims to provide stability to the group. Key players such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leão, João Félix, Vitinha, and João Neves were confirmed, indicating that Jorge Jesus‘ tactical scheme will likely be built upon the established chemistry of these athletes.

The mix of veterans and promising youngsters, such as Tomás Araújo and Fábio Silva, demonstrates the intention for gradual squad renewal.

Challenging schedule ahead

The official debut takes place next Thursday (24), at 3:45 PM (Brasília time), against the Wales squad. The October calendar is intense and will serve as the first real test for the playing philosophy imposed by Jesus.

The coach will have little training time before the marathon of matches against Norway, Denmark, and Norway again.

The M360 Team analyzed the decision to maintain the squad:

The core we inherited possesses undeniable technical quality. The objective is to fine-tune the necessary details so that Portugal continues to compete at the highest level of world football during this new cycle.

Complete list of called-up players

The squad includes Diogo Costa, Rui Silva, and Samuel Soares in goal.

The defensive line is composed of João Cancelo, Diogo Dalot, Rúben Dias, Tomás Araújo, Renato Veiga, Gonçalo Inácio, Nuno Mendes, and Nuno Tavares.

In midfield, João Palhinha, Rúben Neves, Vitinha, João Neves, Bernardo Silva, and Bruno Fernandes were called up.

The attacking contingent will feature Francisco Conceição, Francisco Trincão, Rafael Leão, Pedro Neto, João Félix, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonçalo Ramos, and Fábio Silva.

Maintaining the current structure shows that the coaching staff wants immediate results. With the start of the Nations League, Portugal needs defensive solidity and offensive efficiency to avoid losing crucial points right at the competition’s outset.
