Pirlo is the new Italy head coach following rejections from Guardiola and Ancelotti
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has appointed Andrea Pirlo as the new manager of the Italy national team. The decision comes after a series of unsuccessful attempts to hire high-profile names such as Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola, as reported by the Italian newspaper “Corriere dello Sport”.
Pirlo accepts Maldini’s invitation
Pirlo, who enjoyed a brilliant career as a player, accepted the verbal proposal made by Paolo Maldini, the FIGC’s national team director. The former midfielder, now 47, will sign a contract to lead the Azzurri. His coaching experience includes stints at Juventus, Fatih Karagümrük, Sampdoria, and Dubai United.
The Guardiola dream does not materialize
The FIGC’s main goal, supported by Brazilian consultant Leonardo, was to convince Pep Guardiola to take charge of the Italian national team. They reportedly offered a contract worth 20 million euros per year (approximately 115 million Brazilian Reais), but the Spanish manager declined the offer for personal reasons.
Pirlo’s career
As a player, Andrea Pirlo defined an era, particularly at Milan, where he won numerous titles. He also had a successful tenure at Juventus. Furthermore, he was a key figure in Italy’s 2006 World Cup triumph, cementing his legacy in Italian football history.
