Esporte Clube Vitória is experiencing a period of instability in the Campeonato Brasileiro, with three consecutive losses and a dangerous approach to the relegation zone of Série A.
E.C. Vitória is going through a stark contrast in its 2026 season. While the club is at its peak in the Copa do Brasil, having secured a heroic qualification over Athletico-PR, the scenario in the Brasileirão is one of alarm.
The 2-0 defeat to Flamengo last Sunday (9th) at Maracanã confirmed a negative streak of four winless rounds.
Offensive fragility has been the main obstacle for the team coached by Jair Ventura. With only 22 goals scored in the entire competition, Leão da Barra currently holds the second-worst offense in the tournament.
Since returning after the World Cup break, the team has scored only one goal in five matches played, which directly reflects in the drop in performance in the standings.
Challenges and Focus on Recovery
Coach Jair Ventura, in a press conference after the setback in Rio de Janeiro, acknowledged his discomfort with the situation but rejected the idea that the squad is prioritizing the knockout stage over the national league.
The coach stated:
“I don’t use the word discard. I denied that at another club, said I would go with a full squad and we won there. The home game we were supposed to win, we drew. No game is to be discarded. We have to focus on the Brasileiro, we are uncomfortable and we need to win away from home too.”
Mathematics, however, is starting to become a concern. The distance to the Copa Sudamericana qualification zone has increased to three points, while the margin to the Z4 has shrunk to just four.
The situation is worsened by the fact that direct competitors in lower positions still have games in hand.
The Strength of Barradão
To reverse the trend, the Rubro-Negro is pinning all its hopes on home advantage. Five of the next seven challenges in the Campeonato Brasileiro will be played at Barradão, the ‘Sanctuary’ where the team usually elevates its performance level, driven by the fans.
Jair Ventura highlighted the fans’ role in this decisive moment:
“Playing at Barradão, our fans push us. They play along. The atmosphere. We become very strong with them. They took us to the airport, then filled the stadium again. Without their help, none of this would be possible.”
The recovery streak begins on August 16th (Saturday) against Botafogo, followed by the Ba-Vi derby on the 23rd.
Performance in these home matches will be crucial for the club to distance itself from the bottom of the table and regain the necessary confidence for the rest of the season.
