Flamengo’s football director, José Boto, participated in the prestigious Portugal Football Summit, sharing the club’s strategic vision for leadership and building winning squads.
The global football landscape witnessed Flamengo’s valuable contribution on Thursday (24) through its football director, José Boto. The executive took part in the renowned Portugal Football Summit in Oeiras, Lisbon, where industry leaders and professionals discuss the sport’s direction. The event, hosted at FPF Arena Portugal, serves as a crucial meeting point for exchanging ideas.
Boto was part of a prominent panel, addressing the complexity of building “Winning Teams” alongside figures such as Fernando Meira (Vitória SC), Helena Costa, and Sami Khedira (Real Madrid). Crucial topics like leadership, talent recruitment, player development, and decision-making were central to the discussion, highlighting the pursuit of high performance.
The Rubro-Negro Management Philosophy
During his address, the director of Flamengo detailed the Rio de Janeiro club’s approach, emphasizing the importance of synergy among all areas to achieve sporting objectives. He underscored that the role of the sporting director transcends mere athlete acquisitions, demanding daily, integrated management of multidisciplinary teams.
José Boto stated:
At Flamengo, anything less than winning is a bad result. The daily management work of the club’s various multidisciplinary teams, putting them all at the service of the football team and the performance we want, is fundamental.
Strategy and Alignment with the Presidency
José Boto also addressed the relationship with the club’s president, Luiz Eduardo Baptista (BAP), highlighting the harmony in directing football policies. He reinforced the need to maintain internal strategy, immune to external pressures, whether from social media or influencers.
José Boto pointed out:
The relationship with president BAP is very good, very positive. In professional football, we cannot let outside opinion influence the club’s management.
The planning for upcoming seasons, including the squad assembly for 2026, was another highlight. The strategy aims for a balance between experienced players and promising youngsters, seeking both immediate results and the formation of a solid group for the future. Flamengo, according to Boto, does not focus on selling players but rather on acquiring athletes for on-field performance.
Global Football Vision at the Summit
The Portugal Football Summit is a three-day event that brings together influential personalities from global football. Among this edition’s participants were coach Jorge Jesus (formerly of Flamengo), Deco (sporting director of Barcelona), Pedro Proença (president of the FPF), Laura McAllister (vice-president of UEFA), and renowned former players such as Roberto Carlos and Edgar Davids.
José Boto‘s participation in this international forum reinforces Flamengo‘s position on the global football stage, allowing the club to share its successful practices and absorb valuable insights into the sport’s management trends, innovation, and performance. Knowledge exchange is vital for the club to continue its trajectory of victories and development in high-level football.
