Flamengo’s defensive fragility has been a recurring theme, with the team conceding goals in six of its last seven matches across different competitions.

Despite enjoying a positive spell this season, with significant advancements in the Copa Libertadores and a consistent campaign in the Brazilian Serie A, Flamengo faces a chronic challenge: insecurity in its defensive system.

The recent 2-1 defeat to Cruzeiro last Saturday (22) laid bare this vulnerability, with the Rubro-Negro allowing the opponent to come from behind in the final moments of the match.

The setback in Minas Gerais highlighted a worrying statistic. In their last seven official fixtures, the team led by Leonardo Jardim managed to keep a clean sheet only once — in the 2-0 victory against Vitória.

This recurring pattern of conceded goals generates debate among fans and places the defensive sector under constant scrutiny.

Leonardo Jardim’s Offensive Philosophy

When questioned about how easily his team has been breached, coach Leonardo Jardim defended his playing style.

The Portuguese coach prioritizes aggressive football and admits that the relentless pursuit of attack can naturally leave the defense more exposed over 90 minutes.

Leonardo Jardim stated:

When we have a more offensive dynamic, we certainly have defensive aspects to take care of. We conceded five goals in four games, but offensively we scored 10. I don’t know if I would prefer to score three and win three games by 1-0 and finish the other 0-0. But I wouldn’t, I prefer to score 10, and I think the public prefers it too.

Brazilian Serie A Scenario and Next Steps

Even with the stumble against Cruzeiro, Flamengo remains in direct contention for the top spot in the Brazilian Serie A standings, occupying second place with 45 points.

The focus now is on observing Palmeiras’ performance, as they could extend their lead at the top of the table if they defeat Vasco this Sunday (23).

The team from Gávea maintains a competitive points total, especially considering they have one game in hand compared to their rival from São Paulo.

The postponed match against Mirassol is still awaiting a rescheduled date from the CBF, representing an important asset for Flamengo in their pursuit of the leadership in the final stretch of the championship.
