Flamengo is taking advantage of the FIFA International Break for rest and tactical adjustments. With a day off this Sunday, manager Leonardo Jardim is preparing the squad for the return of the Brazilian Serie A, despite being without several key players.
The Brazilian football calendar has adjusted to the FIFA International Break, a period that keeps national teams busy and offers a breather for clubs. Flamengo, one of the giants of the national game, is navigating this reality with a schedule that balances recovery with intense work. After a series of training sessions at Ninho do Urubu, the Rubro-Negro squad is enjoying a second day off this Sunday (27), aimed at optimizing preparation for upcoming challenges.
The suspension of domestic competitions allows manager Leonardo Jardim to tactically reorganize the team. However, this break also brings a dilemma: the absence of key players who have been called up to their respective national teams, directly impacting the quality of training sessions and the strategic planning for the next few matches.
Rest Period and Resumption of Training
The Flamengo squad has a well-defined schedule for this phase. Following their crucial victory over Red Bull Bragantino last Sunday (20), the players were given Monday (21) off. They returned to the training ground on Tuesday (22), marking the start of four days of activities dedicated to physical and tactical improvement. After completing that sequence on Friday (25), the squad has received another break this Sunday (27) before resuming preparation.
Key Absences During the International Window
The FIFA International Break means that manager Leonardo Jardim must work with a reduced group. Five important athletes were called up and are missing from Flamengo during this period. They are: forwards Samuel Lino and Pedro, representing the Brazil national team; midfielder Anthony Valencia, representing Ecuador; and the Uruguayan duo of Varela and Arrascaeta. The absence of these players, who are fundamental to the tactical scheme, forces the coaching staff to adapt training.
The Concept of the ‘Super FIFA Break’
The current stoppage is part of the international calendar, and the term “Super FIFA Break” has gained traction, illustrating the evolution of these windows. Starting in 2026, FIFA plans to implement a unified and extended window, replacing the separate periods in September and October. Lasting 16 days (from September 21 to October 6), this new structure allows national teams to play up to four matches, double the previous limit. The main goal is to reduce player fatigue caused by repeated intercontinental travel.
While this change is beneficial for player health, it represents a greater challenge for clubs, which will have to deal with national championship stoppages of more than two weeks. The impact on domestic calendars will be significant, requiring even greater adaptation from teams and federations.
Making the most of this time for rest and training, Flamengo seeks to improve its performance for the return to competition. The Rubro-Negro team will take the field again on October 8 for a Brazilian Serie A match. Their opponent will be Santos, in a match scheduled for Vila Belmiro at 7:30 PM (Brasilia time). This clash will be crucial for the club’s ambitions in the national championship.
