BNDES will not offer credit lines to clubs affected by the betting ban
The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) has confirmed that it will not, at this time, create an emergency credit line to assist football clubs.
The measure was intended to provide relief to organizations impacted by the recent ban on sports betting activities in Brazil, a decision that is shaking the sport’s financial landscape.
Expectations for financial breathing room emerged amidst discussions regarding a Provisional Measure (MP) from the Federal Government, which aims to ban virtual betting.
Clubs in the Brazilian Serie A and B have been seeking support to mitigate the crisis resulting from the end of sponsorship deals with betting companies.
However, BNDES has taken a clear stance, dismissing the possibility of any direct financing for the clubs.

In an official statement, BNDES denied any involvement in debates regarding financing for football clubs.
The institution rejected reports that it would operate a subsidized line, citing statutory prohibitions that prevent this type of operation.
The official statement puts an end to speculation regarding the bank’s role in this context.
BNDES communicated:
BNDES has not participated in any external or internal discussion or debate regarding the possibility of financing football clubs.
The Bank has a statutory prohibition against providing financing to clubs.
Therefore, reports that BNDES will operate a subsidized line for this sector are inaccurate.
The betting ban and its impact on football
The Federal Government’s decision to prohibit sports betting platform operations, announced last Friday (25), represents an earthquake for Brazilian football.
Currently, 14 out of 20 Serie A clubs have betting brands as their main jersey sponsors.
The loss of these contracts creates a significant financial void, with the potential to impact the economic health of several teams.
Flamengo, one of the clubs most exposed to this reality, maintains its largest sponsorship deal with Betano, valued at R$ 268 million per season.
The concern is palpable, as expressed by the club’s president, Luiz Eduardo Baptista (Bap), who admitted the lack of an immediate plan B in the face of the drastic measure.
Luiz Eduardo Baptista stated:
It is very difficult, in the short term, to say what we can do, because this is a very drastic measure.
I would be lying if I said that we have a plan B for this.
We do not.
He projects an impact of approximately R$ 400 million on the club’s revenue for the coming year, considering both the direct and indirect effects of the ban.
