Flamengo has finalized the transfer of forward Alan Santos to Benfica, while retaining 50% of his rights for future profit.

Flamengo continues its strategy in the transfer market, as another talent from its youth academy heads to Portuguese football. This Friday (14), the Rubro-Negro formalized the departure of 19-year-old forward Alan Santos to Benfica. The deal, which did not involve an immediate transfer fee, focuses on long-term financial returns for the Rio-based club.

The most significant aspect of the transaction is Flamengo’s retention of 50% of Alan Santoseconomic rights. This clause ensures the club can profit significantly from a future sale of the player in the demanding European market.

Negotiation Details and Expectations

The decision to release Alan Santos without an initial fee, but with a percentage of future sales, was based on the analysis that the young forward would have few opportunities in the first team, currently managed by Leonardo Jardim. The expectation is that as he develops in Europe, his market value will increase, justifying Flamengo’s bet.

The player will initially join Benfica’s B team, with the goal of earning a promotion to the senior squad through his performance and development. This path is seen as fundamental to his growth in the international football landscape.

Alan Santos’ Trajectory at Flamengo

Despite limited appearances with the professional team—only three games at the start of the Campeonato Carioca with no goals or assists—Alan Santos demonstrated his potential in youth competitions. He was one of the standouts in this year’s U-20 Copa Libertadores, where Flamengo finished as runners-up. The forward excelled with three goals and one assist, making him the player with the most goal involvements in the tournament.

Flamengo’s Recurring Strategy

The departure of Alan Santos to Benfica aligns with a recent pattern for Flamengo of releasing young talents to Portuguese football, following a business model that seeks future returns through percentages of sales. Cases such as those of Rayan Lucas (Alverca), Kaio Nóbrega (Estoril), and David Viana (Portimonense) illustrate this approach, where the club invests in the development of players in a more competitive market.

Flamengo’s strategy with Alan Santos represents a calculated bet on the player’s potential and the European market’s ability to transform prospects into valuable assets. The M360 Team notes that while this approach does not bring immediate returns, it could prove highly profitable in the future if the forward manages to stand out in the Portuguese scene. It is a maneuver that reflects the club’s effort to optimize the flow of talent from its youth academy, balancing the development of young players with financial potential.
