Following the departure of key forwards, Flamengo is intensifying its search for reinforcements in the Argentine market, with River Plate’s young prospect Joaquín Freitas among the top targets for the Copa Libertadores.

Flamengo has become active in the transfer market once again. The board is seeking replacements for the offensive unit following the recent exits of Plata, who transferred to Dynamo Moscow in Russia, and Wallace Yan, who was sold to Bragantino. The priority is to find a player to fill the vacancy left by Plata, who was a key component in coach Leonardo Jardim’s system.

With the goal of filling this void, the Rio-based club has directed its focus toward the Argentine market. Inquiries with teams in the neighboring country have already begun, highlighting a clear strategy to scout new talent and secure reinforcements for the first team.

Focus on young talent and the Argentine market

Flamengo’s management policy prioritizes betting on young athletes identified by its scouting department. This approach aims to bring in players with developmental potential who can quickly integrate into the squad. The Argentine market is viewed as a fertile ground for this type of investment, and the club has been exploring various options.

Among the names that have emerged as potential targets, 19-year-old forward Joaquín Freitas, from River Plate, has gained prominence in the Argentine press. As reported by TyC Sports, Flamengo has reportedly made inquiries to understand the costs and conditions of a potential deal, a detail confirmed by sources in Argentina to the M360 Team.

Details on Joaquín Freitas and obstacles

Joaquín Freitas has been a regular presence in the River Plate first-team squad, even following the arrival of major signings like Ángel Correa, Borré, and Lucas Beltrán. He has appeared in 30 matches this season, contributing one goal and two assists. His contract with the Argentine club runs until the end of 2028, and the team has shown no intention of facilitating the young talent’s departure.

A race against time in the Libertadores

In addition to Joaquín Freitas, Flamengo is keeping other names from Argentine football on its radar. However, time is a critical factor for the club. There is only one week left to register new signings for the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals, where they will face current Ecuadorian champions Independiente del Valle, who are currently on an impressive winning streak. CONMEBOL’s registration deadline for the next phase of the competition is September 4, while the transfer window in Brazil remains open until September 11.

Previous experiences with scouted reinforcements

The current management, which took over at the start of 2024, has already made signings based on scouting profiles. Two notable examples include forward Juninho, who arrived from Qarabag (Azerbaijan) but failed to establish himself and later transferred to Pumas (Mexico), and goalkeeper Andrew, formerly of Gil Vicente (Portugal), who currently serves as a backup to Rossi.

A recent episode involved Irish forward Mikey Johnston from West Bromwich in England’s second division. In 2025, Flamengo was close to signing him, even going as far as issuing his plane ticket to Rio de Janeiro for medical exams. However, the club called off the deal following negative backlash from the fans.

The search for a new forward is crucial for Flamengo, especially ahead of the imminent decisive stage of the Libertadores. The strategy of focusing on the Argentine market and young talent reflects a bet on future potential, but the need to finalize a deal in time for registration in the continental competition places additional pressure on the club.
