Rubro-Negro icon Ronaldo Angelim has questioned the lack of criticism directed at Abel Ferreira at Palmeiras, comparing the current scenario to the pressure he would face if he were in charge of Flamengo.
The historic rivalry between Flamengo and Palmeiras has added a new chapter off the pitch. Ronaldo Angelim, an eternal idol of the Rio-based club and scorer of the goal that secured the 2009 Brazilian Serie A title, took to social media to take a jab at the work of manager Abel Ferreira.
The former defender expressed frustration with what he considers to be excessive tolerance from fans and the press in São Paulo regarding the team’s sub-par performances. For the player nicknamed “Magro de Aço,” the Portuguese coach’s management at Palmeiras is treated with a level of leniency that, in his view, would never be seen at Gávea.
The perspective of the Flamengo icon
Angelim‘s statement reignites the debate over the weight of historic jerseys and the culture of accountability in Brazilian football. The former player used the context of a criticized performance by the São Paulo side against Fluminense in the Copa Libertadores semifinals to fire shots at the coach’s job security.
Abel Ferreira’s work at Palmeiras seems untouchable. If he were in charge of Flamengo after poor performances, the pressure would be unbearable. He definitely has what we could call the best job in the world of football right now.
High-tension scenario in the Brazilian Serie A
Angelim‘s remarks are no coincidence. Flamengo and Palmeiras are locked in an electrifying battle for the top spot in the Brazilian Serie A. Currently, the Rio club leads the table with 64 points, just one point ahead of their rivals from São Paulo, who have 63. Every remaining round is crucial for the fate of the national trophy.
While Palmeiras prepares to face Athletico-PR at Arena da Baixada without key players such as Gustavo Gómez and Giay, Flamengo turns its attention to the clash against Bahia at Arena Fonte Nova. The atmosphere is one of absolute intensity.
Beyond the fight for the Brazilian title, the possibility of a historic meeting in the Copa Libertadores final keeps fans on edge. Should both teams advance in their semifinals—with Palmeiras holding an advantage over Fluminense—it would be the third direct clash between these national powerhouses for the continental trophy, cementing a hegemony that continues to shape the South American football landscape.
