Flamengo Overcomes Altitude and Independiente del Valle in Quito, Securing an Advantage in Libertadores Quarterfinals.
Flamengo achieved a historic victory on Thursday night (10), defeating Independiente del Valle (ECU) 2-0 in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals. The triumph in Quito, at an altitude of 2,850 meters, marks the first time the Rubro-Negro has overcome the Ecuadorians in their feared ‘cauldron.’ The away win gives the Rio de Janeiro club a significant advantage for the return leg.
Second Half Goals Decide the Match
After a first half marked by strong pressure from Independiente del Valle and a scoreless tie, Flamengo showed resilience and efficiency in the second half. At 15 minutes into the second half, Bruno Henrique opened the scoring, capitalizing on a beautiful assist from Samuel Lino.
The second goal came at 29 minutes, with Léo Pereira finishing a cross from Emerson Royal. The goals secured a crucial away victory, demonstrating the team’s ability to impose itself even in adverse conditions.
Historic Taboo Broken at Altitude
The result in Quito not only puts Flamengo ahead in the tie but also breaks a historic taboo. Prior to this match, the Rubro-Negro had accumulated two draws and one loss in their previous encounters in Ecuador against Independiente del Valle.
Today’s victory represents the first time the Rio de Janeiro club has emerged victorious on Ecuadorian soil against this opponent, erasing a negative track record.
Advantage for the Return Leg
With the 2-0 scoreline, Flamengo arrives at the Maracanã with a comfortable margin to secure qualification. A one-goal loss at home in Rio de Janeiro would still be enough for the Rubro-Negro to advance to the Libertadores semifinals.
However, Independiente del Valle will need to overturn a two-goal deficit to force a penalty shootout. The return leg is scheduled for next Thursday (17) at 9:30 PM (Brasília time) at the Maracanã.
The Mais Querido (Most Beloved) will count on the support of its fans to seal a spot in the next phase of the continental tournament. Flamengo‘s next commitment before the decisive duel will be this Sunday (13), against Corinthians, in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
The match, valid for the 27th round, will also take place at the Maracanã, leaving the team with little recovery time between the week’s important games.
