Estudiantes Defeats Corinthians, Advances in Libertadores; Awaits Flamengo or Del Valle.
Estudiantes de La Plata secured their spot in the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores de América after a hard-fought victory against Corinthians. The Argentine team won 1-0 at Neo Química Arena on Wednesday (16), a result which, combined with the 1-1 draw in the first leg, sealed their qualification.
Now, Estudiantes prepares to face the winner of the clash between Flamengo and Independiente del Valle.
A Decisive Goal and Tactical Play
The match in São Paulo saw a scarcity of clear opportunities for both sides. Goalkeepers Hugo Souza and Fernando Muslera had few interventions.
In a scenario with few chances, Estudiantes managed to capitalize on one. In the 43rd minute of the second half, Tomás Palacios reached the end line and crossed it back.
Alexis Castro, with a precise first-touch shot, found the net and silenced the Corinthians supporters.
Absences and Next Steps
The match also saw three players booked with yellow cards: Breno Bidon (Corinthians), Tomás Palacios, and Leandro González (Estudiantes).
The Argentine players, in particular, could be important absences for the semifinal. Estudiantes will face the qualifier between Flamengo and Independiente del Valle during the weeks of October 14 and 21.
A Possible Rematch and the Other Semifinal
Should Flamengo advance, the matchup could represent a rematch, as the Brazilian club eliminated Estudiantes in the quarterfinals of last year’s Libertadores edition.
The other semifinalist will be determined this Thursday (17) at the Maracanã. Rubro-Negro, with a 2-0 advantage built in Quito, can even lose by one goal to secure their spot.
The winner of this clash will meet the victor of the Palmeiras vs. Fluminense semifinal in the grand final. Both Palmeiras and Fluminense have already qualified for their semifinal, with Palmeiras advancing on penalties and Fluminense on aggregate.
Pedro Paulo Catonho, a journalist from Coluna do Fla, stated:
“Should Flamengo eliminate Independiente del Valle, they will enter the Libertadores semifinals as favorites. The fact that they would play the decisive leg at home carries significant weight at this stage of the competition. However, one cannot think about the semifinals before overcoming the quarterfinals.”
The consolidation of their favoritism will depend on their performance against Independiente del Valle and, subsequently, their opponent in the semifinal, where the pressure of playing the decisive leg at home could be a crucial factor.
