Cruzeiro surprised many by snatching midfielder Zé Lucas from Flamengo’s radar, finalizing the signing of the promising Sport player in a high-value deal.
The Brazilian football transfer window continues in full swing, and Cruzeiro made a splash in the market this Saturday (25) by announcing the signing of young midfielder Zé Lucas from Sport. The negotiation adds a layer of rivalry, as the player was one of Flamengo’s targets, with the club monitoring his performance and having plans to integrate him into their squad. However, the Foxes acted quickly and enticed the player with a project that ultimately prevailed over the Rubro-Negro’s intentions.
Zé Lucas’s arrival at Toca da Raposa represents a significant investment and a clear intention by Cruzeiro to strengthen its midfield. Losing the player to a direct rival in the race for young talent raises a red flag in Flamengo’s planning, as the club saw a promising name slip away.
Cruzeiro Invests Heavily to Secure New Signing
To secure the gem from Pernambuco, Cruzeiro paid out $5 million (R$ 25.3 million) for 60% of Zé Lucas’s economic rights. Sport, his youth club, will retain 20% of his transfer rights for future negotiations. In addition to the cash sum, the transaction involved the loan of Chico da Costa and Murilo Rhikman until the end of 2026, with Cruzeiro ceding 35% of Murilo’s transfer rights. Zé Lucas’s contract with the Foxes extends until June 2031, signaling a long-term commitment.
Fierce Competition with Flamengo
Behind the scenes, Flamengo also made its offer for Zé Lucas. The Rubro-Negro offered €2 million (R$ 11.6 million) for 20% of his rights, with mandatory purchase clauses that could bring the total value of the deal to €6 million (R$ 34.8 million). Although the final values were similar between the proposals, the targets set by Cruzeiro were considered more accessible, influencing the player’s decision to join the Minas Gerais team.
On its social media, Cruzeiro celebrated the acquisition: “Welcome, Zé Lucas. O Cabuloso has finalized the signing of the midfielder until June 2031! Leave your welcome message.” The move demonstrates the strength of the market and the importance of good planning to secure significant reinforcements.
Who is Zé Lucas?
Developed in Sport’s youth academy, Zé Lucas had a standout year in 2025, playing 34 matches. Even with the Pernambuco-based team’s relegation, the young midfielder managed to attract the attention of major clubs. His consistent presence in the call-ups for the Brazil U-17 national team reinforces the player’s potential and technical quality, and he will now seek to consolidate his career at Cruzeiro.
Flamengo’s Focus and Next Steps
While Zé Lucas heads to Minas Gerais, Flamengo remains active in the search for new names. The Rio de Janeiro club’s priorities for the next transfer window include a center-forward and a winger, in addition to the negotiation with Thiago Almada, a midfielder from Atlético de Madrid (ESP), which is close to being announced. The Rubro-Negro board continues working to strengthen the squad.
This Sunday (26), Flamengo will have an important commitment in the Brazilian Serie A. Leonardo Jardim’s team will face São Paulo at Maracanã at 6:30 PM (Brasília time) in the 20th round of the championship. The match is crucial for the club’s ambitions this season, and the team will seek a victory to maintain high performance. The confrontation will be broadcast on pay-per-view.
