Amid a severe financial crisis, Corinthians is using Flamengo’s history as a blueprint to justify the release of forward Memphis Depay, aiming to balance its books.

Corinthians is undergoing a deep restructuring process behind the scenes. President Osmar Stabile has made the decision to part ways with the Dutch athlete official, pointing out that the player’s high salary is incompatible with the club’s current budgetary reality. The strategy adopted by the Alvinegro leadership seeks to repeat a precedent in Brazilian football: the playbook Flamengo used in 2013 to navigate its own financial troubles.

At the time, the Rubro-Negro was going through a period of strict austerity. To resolve a significant 6 million euro debt with CSKA Moscow regarding the acquisition of Vagner Love, the Flamengo board opted for the forward’s return to Russian football as part of the deal to settle the debt. The move was seen as a necessary step to get the club back on track, even though it cost them the departure of a star player.

The impasse with the Dutch star

The situation involving Memphis Depay at Parque São Jorge became unsustainable following contractual failures and broken promises by the sponsor responsible for his arrival. Despite a verbal agreement, the lack of payments and the instability of the previous administration made the forward’s stay impossible. Now, the athlete is a free agent and, according to reports, is considering taking legal action to claim outstanding amounts.

Analysis and comparison of scenarios

When comparing the two situations, the M360 Team highlights that the Flamengo of 2013 was facing a “scorched earth” reality, very different from the stability achieved by the Rio club today, which now holds significant bargaining power in the market. For the M360 Team, the Corinthians case raises deeper questions:

The departure of a marquee player does not solve the systemic problem. It remains to be seen whether Memphis is the real obstacle or if the club’s payroll is inflated by other contracts that also failed to deliver the expected performance on the pitch.

The conclusion of this saga is expected to directly impact the planning for the remainder of the São Paulo team’s season. While Flamengo remains focused on retaining its key players and managing high revenues, Corinthians is attempting to avoid financial collapse through drastic measures, acknowledging that the era of unsustainable high-profile signings must end so the team can pursue a technical and administrative recovery.
