Brazilian clubs, including Flamengo, publish manifesto against new restrictions on the sports betting market, warning of severe financial impacts and risks of insolvency in national football.
In an unprecedented joint effort, Brazilian football giants such as Flamengo, Palmeiras, São Paulo, Vasco, Botafogo, Fluminense, and Santos have united to publish a manifesto titled ‘The End of Football.’ The initiative comes as a direct response to the Federal Government’s plans to severely restrict the betting market through a new Provisional Measure.
The movement, which also has the support of the Rio de Janeiro (FERJ) and São Paulo (FPF) federations, argues that any drastic measure against the legalized sector could destabilize the sports economy. Currently, investments from betting companies in Brazilian Serie A clubs total approximately R$ 1 billion annually, a crucial amount for maintaining sports structures and projects.
The Importance of Investments in Sports
The clubs argue that the regulated betting sector is currently one of the financial pillars supporting various organizations. For smaller teams or those competing in lower divisions, the withdrawal of these resources would mean an immediate administrative collapse.
Investment from authorized betting companies has become one of the sport’s main sources of revenue. Making this model unviable will not make betting cease to exist. It will only open the way for consumers to fully migrate to clandestine platforms.
Concerns About the Clandestine Market
The clubs’ main criticism focuses on the side effect that the restriction would cause. Instead of protecting fans, the manifesto suggests that consumers would migrate to unregulated sites that operate without state oversight, without taxes, and without any responsible gaming policies.
According to the M360 Team, club officials fear that the government, in attempting to curb abuses—such as the excessive use of the so-called ‘Tigrinho’—will end up making unviable a sector that, under strict rules, brought transparency and resources that aided in the professionalization of South American football.
Next Steps in Brasília
The situation is one of total apprehension, with the submission of the Provisional Measure scheduled for next Tuesday (22). While the sports sector calls for dialogue, members of the Federal Government are trying to find a middle ground that restricts only specific types of casino games, sparing traditional sports betting companies.
The impact of this decision will define the financial future of many Brazilian clubs for the upcoming seasons. The M360 Team will continue to follow negotiations between the government and club executives, who promise to fight for the preservation of the current model, under the risk of, according to the manifesto, declaring the end of many professional clubs in the country.
