Flamengo president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap, has expressed extreme concern over the new rules for sports betting in Brazil, projecting a negative impact of R$ 400 million on the club’s revenues for next year.

The federal government is officially signing a new Provisional Measure (MP) on Friday (25) that promises to tighten control over the betting market in the country. The measure, which aims to curb household debt and reduce public health risks, has generated uncertainty behind the scenes in Brazilian football. For Flamengo, the situation is on high alert, especially due to its reliance on sponsorship contracts that could undergo drastic changes.

In an interview with the portal ‘Metrópoles’, Bap did not hide his apprehension regarding the speed of the changes and the lack of an immediate alternative for the club. The executive stressed that Mengão operates within current legal standards and that the abrupt cut in revenues could compromise financial planning for upcoming seasons.

Financial Impact and the Non-Existent “Plan B”

The direct and indirect losses estimated by the red-black board reach around R$ 400 million. According to Flamengo‘s president, the management never considered the possibility that contracts signed under the backing of the law could be invalidated in such a short timeframe.

“It is very difficult, in the short term, for us to say what we can do, because this is a very drastic measure. I would be lying if I said we have a Plan B for this. We don’t. We never considered the possibility that existing contracts based on an absolutely legal model could be eliminated,” declared Bap, as reported by M360 Staff.

The Future of the Partnership with Betano

One of the points of greatest attention is the contract with Betano, Flamengo‘s current main shirt sponsor. With a record agreement providing R$ 268 million annually until 2028, the company has reportedly informally signaled the possibility of termination, although no official notification has been sent to Gávea so far. The concern behind the scenes is that if the MP imposes severe restrictions on advertising or online casino operations, the viability of the club’s largest sponsorship in history will be called into question.

As Lula‘s government prepares to sign the decree, Brazilian clubs, including Flamengo, continue to monitor developments. The impact goes beyond immediate finances: budget readjustment for the next season has become an urgency, as the club needs to honor long-term commitments based on a legal landscape that is now proving unstable. Expectations are that in the coming weeks, the guidelines of the new regulation will provide more clarity regarding the future of partnerships between teams and betting platforms.
