Palmeiras is defeated at home by Atlético-MG, ending a one-year unbeaten run in the Brazilian Serie A.

Palmeiras had its fortress shaken. In an electrifying duel for the 20th round of the Brazilian Serie A, Verdão succumbed to Atlético-MG 2-1 at Allianz Parque last Sunday, breaking an impressive 14-game unbeaten streak at home in the national competition. The last time the São Paulo club had been defeated as a host in Serie A was in May 2025, against Flamengo.

The unbeaten streak, which had turned Allianz Parque into a true cauldron and one of Palmeiras‘ greatest assets in the fight for the top positions, comes to an end. Despite maintaining the league lead with 44 points, the loss reduced their advantage over direct rivals, especially with Flamengo‘s stumble.

The Start of the Game: Dominance Without Effectiveness

Despite playing at home, Palmeiras couldn’t impose its rhythm and translate its dominance into goals. Abel Ferreira‘s team controlled possession in the first half, nearing 69%, and created the best chances. A penalty was awarded, momentarily exciting the crowd, but a VAR intervention overturned the call, frustrating the Palmeiras faithful.

Atlético-MG Shows Efficiency and Takes the Lead

While Palmeiras struggled to break through the opponent’s defense, Galo proved lethal. In the second half, in the ninth minute, a long pass from Cassierra outside the box resulted in a rebound from Carlos Miguel. Victor Hugo, sharp, appeared unmarked to score and put the visitors ahead, silencing Allianz Parque.

Timid Reaction and Quick Comeback by Galo

With the score against them, Abel Ferreira sought to energize the team by bringing in Vitor Roque and Felipe Anderson. The gamble paid off in the 29th minute when Arias set up Felipe Anderson, who didn’t waste the chance and tied the match, reigniting the fans’ hope. However, the joy was short-lived. Just two minutes later, on a blistering counter-attack, Igor Gomes, also a substitute, found the back of the net, sealing Atlético-MG‘s 2-1 victory.

The home defeat marks a point of concern for Palmeiras. Although they retain the lead, the end of their year-long unbeaten run serves as a warning for the team, which now needs to react quickly to maintain its top position and continue its title pursuit in the Brazilian Serie A. Galo, on the other hand, celebrates a significant away win, showcasing their strength and ambition in the competition.
