Developed at Flamengo, forward André Luiz highlights what he learned with the Rio side and celebrates stellar form at Sporting Kansas City following a record transfer to MLS.
The search for playing time and a prominent role in professional soccer led forward André Luiz to make bold decisions early in his career. Developed in Flamengo‘s youth academy, the 24-year-old player is now enjoying a breakthrough period playing for Sporting Kansas City in the United States.
Fierce competition in the Rio club’s attack, which featured established icons, ultimately motivated his move abroad. The journey culminated in the most expensive signing in the American team’s history, where the player has established himself as an undisputed starter.
Fierce competition and lessons learned at Ninho do Urubu
Signed by Flamengo in 2020 after standing out for América-RJ in the Copinha youth tournament, the forward had to overcome challenges to shine for the Under-20s. His strong performances in the youth setup, featuring goals and assists, earned him a promotion to the first team at the end of 2021.
However, the presence of big names in the squad made it difficult to get a consistent run as a starter in the senior team. Established stars like Bruno Henrique, Arrascaeta, Pedro, and Gabigol anchored the Rio de Janeiro side’s attack.
Despite making few first-team appearances, his time with the senior squad yielded valuable lessons, especially under the guidance of experienced defender David Luiz in daily training sessions.
I understood that it was a bit difficult to be playing, but I learned a lot. David Luiz taught me a lot. I learned so much, I was happy, but I needed to go somewhere where I could play.
From European soccer to a record MLS deal
Without room in the Rubro-Negro squad, André Luiz built his path in Europe with stints at Estrela da Amadora and Rio Ave in Portugal, as well as Olympiacos in Greece.
The player’s standout performances on Portuguese soil caught the attention of Sporting Kansas City, which invested around $18 million guaranteed, plus add-ons, in the deal. The contract signed by the Brazilian spans five seasons.
The multi-million dollar transfer also provided a financial boost to Flamengo and América-RJ, who were entitled to a percentage of the deal through FIFA‘s solidarity mechanism.
Key role and a goal scoring streak in the United States
His arrival in U.S. soccer provided the consistency the player had been seeking since the start of his career. The forward quickly assumed a decisive role in the American franchise’s attack.
Between September and October, the Brazilian scored five goals during a remarkable four-match streak in MLS.
With strong performances and a guaranteed starting spot, the player is showing that his decision to seek new opportunities was crucial to proving his potential on the international stage.
