FIFA retreats on plan to sell shares following intense pressure from UEFA, securing European participation in future tournaments.
FIFA announced on Tuesday (28) that it has abandoned its plan to sell minority stakes in competitions, including the World Cup, to private investors. The decision follows strong opposition led by UEFA, which threatened to boycott the football governing body’s tournaments.
The proposal aimed to raise approximately $4.2 billion. However, the strong backlash from federations and confederations, including Concacaf and UEFA itself, forced the organization to reevaluate its path, aiming to preserve the unity and global interests of the sport.
