Court upholds decisive Vasco vs. Boca Juniors clash at Maracanã after red-and-green management’s failed attempt to block the match.

The legal drama surrounding the use of the Maracanã reached a final chapter this week.

Even after a last-minute attempt by stadium operator Fla-Flu Serviços S.A., the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice upheld the hosting of the international semifinal at Rio soccer’s main stage.

The legal dispute, which had been dragging on for weeks, mobilized behind-the-scenes figures in Brazilian sports and sparked intense debate over the event schedule at the iconic stadium.

The joint management formed by Flamengo and Fluminense tried to suspend the event, arguing that advance ticket sales constituted an attempt to pressure the judiciary.

However, the panel of appellate judges ruled that mass ticket sales made reversing logistics unfeasible.

The ruling by the court’s Special Body confirmed that the match will go ahead as planned, to the relief of Cruz-Maltino fans and the frustration of their rival duo.

Arguments and pitch wear

Since late September, the Maracanã management had been resisting authorizing the match, pointing to pitch wear and tear as the main obstacle.

Concerns grew following an NFL event and the subsequent full replacement of the turf.

The crowded schedule triggered strong reactions behind the scenes, even affecting Olympic sports, such as the relocation of a Flamengo basketball derby to the Tijuca Tênis Clube.

Despite attempts to move the match to Estádio Nilton Santos, security authorities such as Bepe and the Public Prosecutor’s Office identified the Maracanã as the safest and most suitable venue.

The Superior Court of Justice had also previously denied earlier appeals by the concessionaire, paving the way for a favorable outcome for the São Januário club.

The effort to block the match sparked debates over shared stadium management, but priority ultimately went to fan logistics and public safety.

Next steps and a packed schedule

With the match confirmed for this Tuesday, Vasco takes the field with the advantage earned in the first leg in Buenos Aires, needing only a draw to advance.

On the other hand, the Maracanã schedule remains under heavy pressure.

Flamengo returns to the pitch shortly after, on Thursday, to face Estudiantes in the Copa Libertadores, following a technical inspection by Conmebol.

The rivalry thus extends beyond the pitch and promises new chapters in the upcoming Brazilian Serie A fixtures.
