Palmeiras requests 10% of Maracanã tickets for Libertadores semifinal against Fluminense
Palmeiras has formally requested that CONMEBOL grant them 10% of the Maracanã stadium’s capacity for one of the Libertadores semifinal matches against Fluminense. The request comes in response to the Rio-based club’s demand for 4,000 tickets for their supporters at Nubank Parque, Palmeiras’ home ground.
The Palmeiras board argues that the 4,000 tickets represent approximately 10% of their stadium’s capacity. Consequently, they are seeking the same percentage for Palmeiras fans during the first leg of the decisive series, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro.
Reciprocity as the core argument
The CONMEBOL Libertadores regulations stipulate that home teams must provide at least 4,000 tickets to away fans during semifinal matches. Fluminense has remained firm regarding this quota, while at Nubank Parque, due to security concerns in São Paulo, the visitor section typically accommodates around 2,000 fans.
In previous editions of the Libertadores, when Palmeiras also reached the final stages, reciprocity agreements involving a 2,000-ticket allocation for away fans in both legs were common. However, Fluminense‘s stance this year has prompted the São Paulo club to push for equal treatment.
Request as an exception
To facilitate the increased ticket allocation at Nubank Parque, Palmeiras required authorization from the Military Police. The request submitted to the governing body of South American football is intended to ensure that the club is not at a disadvantage regarding fan representation.
The first match between Fluminense and Palmeiras is scheduled for October 14 at 9:30 PM at the Maracanã. The return leg, which will determine who advances to the final, will take place on October 21 at the same time in São Paulo. The outcome of these ticket negotiations could impact the atmosphere of these decisive matches.
