Flamengo conceded a 1-1 draw to América-MG and now needs rivals to falter and to win their final matches to secure a spot in the Women’s Brasileirão quarterfinals.

Flamengo’s position in the Women’s Brasileirão became critical after their 1-1 draw with América-MG on Monday (10). The match, played at Arena Urbsan in Betim, left the red-and-black team outside the qualification zone for the quarterfinals with only two rounds remaining in the first phase.

With 24 points, Mengo is currently ninth in the table. Although they are tied on points with Grêmio, Internacional, and Cruzeiro — teams occupying sixth to eighth place — the tie-breaker criteria, based on the number of wins and goal difference, puts the Rio de Janeiro squad in an unfavorable position, forcing the club to rely on complex calculations to advance.

Dominance That Didn’t Lead to Victory

Despite greater control of offensive actions and superior ball possession, Flamengo saw América-MG, who are third to last in the standings, open the scoring in just the 12th minute. A defensive lapse allowed former red-and-black player Dani Ortolan to score for the Minas Gerais team. The match was also marked by controversial officiating, which disallowed a legitimate goal by Djeni, citing offside from a throw-in, which, by the rules, should not be considered an irregularity.

The Rio de Janeiro side’s reaction only came in the second half, after much persistence. In the 18th minute, veteran Cristiane capitalized on a loose ball in the box and finished precisely. According to analysis by the M360 Team, the equalizing goal saved the club from an even greater setback, but it did not diminish the disappointment with their performance against an opponent fighting against the relegation zone.

The need for a victory for Flamengo is now absolute, as there is no longer any margin for error in the final stretch of the national competition’s first phase.

Path to Qualification

The future of the Red-and-Blacks in the competition will be decided next Sunday (16), when the team faces Santos at 11 AM at Estádio Distrital do Inamar in São Paulo. The match is considered a “final” for both sides: while Flamengo seeks to bounce back and enter the top eight, the Santos team, with 20 points, keeps their mathematical hopes of qualification alive, making the clash one of the most tense of this phase.

The M360 Team will continue to closely follow all details of this decisive confrontation, which could seal the Rio de Janeiro side’s continuation or early elimination from the tournament. In addition to winning the match in Diadema, Flamengo will need to root against their direct competitors vying for the final knockout stage spots.
