Guilherme Smith, of Union SG, finds his way back to the European elite after overcoming conflicts and fresh starts, with his sights set on the Champions League.

Guilherme Smith‘s journey in European football is a narrative of triumph and resilience. At 23 years old, the Brazilian forward for Union Saint-Gilloise is preparing for another appearance in the preliminary round of the UEFA Champions League, a stage that represents the culmination of a challenging path. His career, which began in the youth academies of Rio de Janeiro giants like Fluminense, Vasco, and Botafogo, took an unexpected turn in 2021.

The move to Ukraine to play for Zorya Luhansk was seen as a natural step in his ascent. However, the outbreak of armed conflict in the country placed him in an extremely difficult situation, marked by isolation and the anguish of not being able to communicate easily with his family. This traumatic experience, however, did not deter him.

A Path of Resilience

After a loan spell at Braga in Portugal, where he sought to regain his match fitness, Smith made a decision that defines his mindset: to take “steps back” for bigger leaps forward. His move to Estonian football, playing for Nõmme Kalju in the 2024/25 season, was a chapter in this strategy, where he scored 12 goals in 35 matches, showcasing his goal-scoring prowess.

This “fresh start” phase led him, in 2025, to Union Saint-Gilloise, a Belgian club that had just won a historic national title. There, Smith found an environment conducive to his development, adapting to the wing-back role, a more versatile position that expands his tactical options and, perhaps, catches the eye of the Brazil national team.

European Dreams and Family Strength

His debut in the Champions League against giants Bayern Munich last season was a personal milestone. Now, with the possibility of a new qualification for the European league, Smith has renewed his contract with Union SG until 2030. His goals are clear: to shine in the Premier League or LaLiga.

He recognizes the importance of humility and focus, qualities that helped him overcome adversity, including the lack of contact with his family during critical moments. The prospect of bringing his parents, who have never traveled by plane, to Europe is one of the driving forces behind his pursuit of new dreams in football, always with family as his foundation. Guilherme Smith’s journey is a testament that, even in adverse scenarios, perseverance can rewrite the future.
