Vitória’s President Supports New Rules, But Criticizes Implementation Schedule.

Brazilian football is debating the implementation of new rules, which aim, among other things, to combat “time-wasting” and improve player conduct on the field. Amidst this discussion, Vitória‘s president, Fábio Motta, expressed support for the content of the changes but raised concerns about the chosen timing for their application.

Vitória’s Stance

In an interview with GLOBO, Fábio Motta stated that the club is “100% in favor” of the new measures proposed for national football. However, the executive made a point of emphasizing that Vitória voted against the immediate implementation of the rules this season. The justification for opposing the schedule is the perception that the measure is premature and inopportune.

Criticism Regarding the Timing of the Change

Fábio Motta stated:

First, I am 100% in favor of the implemented measures. I believe it will improve football and reduce what’s called time-wasting in football. However, I am against it being implemented this year; I think the timing is not opportune.

He added that the rush to adopt the new norms might seem like a response to the country’s current refereeing crisis.

Concerns About Management and Adaptation

In the view of Vitória‘s president, Brazilian football still needs to improve its management of existing rules. He argues that an adaptation period is fundamental before introducing new norms, such as the Vini Jr. Law. Motta believes the change should be more gradual and secure.

Caution Regarding the Vini Jr. Law

Regarding the Vini Jr. Law, which mandates expulsion for athletes who cover their mouths when communicating, the executive expressed caution:

You are assuming that every time an athlete covers their mouth, it is to commit an alleged act of racism or an action that goes against basic principles. I understand that this is not the case.

Despite the reservations, Fábio Motta reiterated that Vitória does not oppose the content of the rules, only their immediate application. The expectation is that the changes will be implemented in a more planned manner next year.

The decision to postpone implementation could offer teams more time to prepare for the new guidelines, avoiding surprises and ensuring a smoother transition process for Brazilian football.
