Andrés Matonte will take charge of the match between Flamengo and Independiente del Valle in the Copa Libertadores. The Uruguayan referee, known for having officiated previous games involving the Rubro-Negro, will have the task of maintaining order at the Maracanã.

CONMEBOL has finalized the officiating crew for the decisive round of 16 second-leg clash in the Copa Libertadores de América, which will pit Flamengo against Independiente del Valle. The Uruguayan Andrés Matonte will be responsible for overseeing the match, scheduled for this Thursday, August 17, at 9:30 PM (Brasília time), at the iconic Maracanã stadium. The choice of referee is a focal point of attention, given the importance of the match and the official’s history with the Rio de Janeiro club.

The match is crucial for the Rubro-Negro‘s aspirations in the continental competition. With the advantage gained in the first leg, Flamengo looks to secure their spot in the next round. Matonte‘s presence adds a layer of anticipation, especially considering his previous work in high-stakes matches involving the club.

The Officiating Appointment

CONMEBOL has confirmed 38-year-old Andrés Matonte as the head referee for the showdown at the Maracanã. For the VAR role, another Uruguayan has been appointed: Antonio Garcia. The pair will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of the game at a time when the intensity of the competition reaches its peak, with Flamengo aiming to advance to the quarter-finals.

History with the Rubro-Negro

This will be the fourth time that Andrés Matonte has refereed a Flamengo match in CONMEBOL competitions, including the Libertadores and the Recopa Sudamericana. In 2023, the Uruguayan officiated the second leg of the Recopa, coincidentally against Independiente del Valle, where Flamengo won 1-0 in regular time but were eventually defeated on penalties. Subsequently, Matonte oversaw the 4-0 rout of Bolívar in the 2024 Libertadores and the 4-1 victory over Independiente Medellín in the group stage of the current season.

The Decisive Match Scenario

Flamengo enters the match with a comfortable lead after winning the first leg 2-0 in Quito. This means the Rubro-Negro can afford to lose by up to one goal at the Maracanã and still guarantee direct qualification. If the team suffers a two-goal defeat, the decision will go to a penalty shootout. Conversely, Independiente del Valle requires a victory by three or more goals to advance in regulation time.

Expectations are for a sold-out Maracanã, pushing Flamengo toward the next round. The team must maintain focus and tactical discipline to solidify their lead and ensure progression. The winner of this tie will face either Corinthians or Argentina’s Estudiantes in the quarter-finals, setting up an even more challenging path in the hunt for the continental title.
