The Croatian Football Federation has officially appointed Slaven Bilic as head coach of the national team, seeking to renew energy after an early exit at the 2026 World Cup.
The quest for a new footballing identity in Croatia has officially begun. Following a painful elimination by Portugal in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, the country’s football governing body moved quickly to confirm the return of a familiar face: Slaven Bilic. The 57-year-old manager replaces Zlatko Dalic, bringing an end to a historic era that elevated the country to the ranks of the world’s footballing elite.
The transition marks an attempt to balance tradition with the need for tactical renewal. Dalic, the coach who led Croatia to the 2018 final and a podium finish in 2022, stepped down after the defeat to the Portuguese, making way for Bilic, who already has a successful history at the helm of the national team.
The return of an experienced strategist
The decision to appoint Slaven Bilic was no accident. The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) approved the hire unanimously, highlighting that the coach brings the necessary maturity to manage the roster in the post-Luka Modric era. Between 2006 and 2012, Bilic built a solid foundation, recording 42 wins in 65 matches—a record that fans hope to see replicated in this new chapter.
“I am extremely excited about this challenge, for which I feel fully prepared, being a more mature and experienced coach than I was in 2006, but with the same motivation and desire to see Croatia be strong, bold, and successful,” the new manager declared at a press conference.
Challenges and the future of the Croatian national team
Succeeding Zlatko Dalic is, without a doubt, the new manager’s greatest obstacle. His predecessor solidified a “golden generation,” and the pressure for immediate results in upcoming international competitions will be constant. Marijan Kustic, president of the HNS, emphasized that the experience Bilic accumulated at clubs like West Ham and Al-Fateh was fundamental in ensuring he is the right man for the moment.
With the restructuring set, Croatia turns its eyes toward the future. The fans, passionate about the grit and commitment that define Croatian football, are now awaiting the new manager’s debut, hoping that the boldness promised by Slaven Bilic will return the team to the spotlight of major global tournaments.
