Santos Futebol Clube officially announced on Monday the signing of Philippe Coutinho, who joins the club after a period without a contract. The deal, which had been anticipated by star Neymar, formalizes the arrival of the midfielder, who signs a contract valid until the end of the current season.
Expectations for Coutinho are high, not only due to Neymar‘s endorsement but also because of his experience and the significance of wearing Santos’s No. 11 jersey. The player’s arrival represents a strategic move for the club as it seeks reinforcements for the remainder of the Brazilian Serie A and, potentially, the Copa Sudamericana.
Career Restart at Vila Belmiro
Philippe Coutinho, 34, had been without a club since leaving Vasco da Gama in February. At Santos, this will be his second stint with a Brazilian team, and he will wear the No. 11 jersey, which was given up by Rony.
The player expressed his satisfaction with this new chapter:
I am very happy to be joining a great club and to resume my football career. Playing for a club where Pelé played is very important, and also alongside Neymar, who is a star and an idol. Challenges and Debut Deadlines
Despite the official announcement, there is a deadline for Coutinho‘s registration. Santos has until October 7 to register the player’s name with the CBF‘s BID (Daily Bulletin of Information), which will allow him to play in the Brazilian Serie A and a potential Copa Sudamericana semifinal.
Philippe Coutinho‘s last official match was on February 14, for Vasco. After that date, the player cited mental health issues and terminated his contract.
Although he has maintained training to stay fit, his inactivity on the field could delay his debut for Santos.
Physical Preparation and Projected Return
His successful medical exams indicated that Coutinho is in good physical condition. However, regaining match fitness is expected to require about two weeks of intensive training at CT Rei Pelé.
As a result, the midfielder is expected to be available to the coach after the FIFA international break, which begins on September 21. A safer timeline for his appearance on the field would be after the resumption of Brazilian football activities, scheduled for October 6.
