Russia Climbs World Rankings, Overtakes Brazil in Men’s Volleyball
The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has released its latest world rankings, and Russia is in a prominent position. Following the lifting of the ban imposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Russian men’s national team has returned to third place, surpassing Brazil, which now occupies the seventh position.
Russia’s return to the international men’s volleyball scene is marked by an impressive score of 352.10 points. The country trails only leaders such as Poland (377.54) and Italy (367.53). Brazil, on the other hand, has accumulated 316.79 points, highlighting the shift in the sport’s power dynamics.
Anticipated Return and Impact on the Scene
Russia’s absence from the rankings began in 2022 due to restrictions imposed by the IOC related to the country’s military invasion of Ukraine. The men’s team’s last participation in official competitions was in September 2021. The IOC‘s decision to suspend the ban allows Russia to reclaim its place in world volleyball, as announced by the FIVB itself.
Women’s Category Also Sees New Developments
In the women’s category, Russia is also being reintegrated into the rankings, currently holding the ninth position with 277.59 points. The women’s list is led by Italy, closely followed by Brazil. The Russian women’s team last competed in August 2021.
Repercussions and Next Steps
The Russian Volleyball Federation celebrated its return to competitions and rankings through its social media channels. Russia’s inclusion in the international arena promises to add even more competitiveness to future contests, reshaping expectations for upcoming volleyball tournaments.
