Rafael Leão sparks fan excitement as he reveals a desire to play in Rio, with a clear preference for one specific club.
Forward Rafael Leão, star of AC Milan and the Portugal national team, shook the football world this Thursday (23) during an appearance on the ‘PodPah’ podcast. In a statement that made waves instantly, the player revealed his desire to play in Brazil and pointed to Rio de Janeiro as his preferred destination should he ever decide to play on Brazilian soil. Emphatically, Leão declared that if he were to play in the ‘Cidade Maravilhosa’ (Marvelous City), there is only one club on his radar.
Although he did not explicitly name the team, Rafael Leão‘s preference for Flamengo is an open secret among fans. The Portuguese forward frequently shows his affection for the Rio-based club, often posting photos on his social media wearing the red-and-black jersey during his vacations. This connection with Mengão is a strong bond that fuels the dream of seeing him one day playing at the Maracanã.
During his podcast appearance, the AC Milan star detailed his affection for the ‘Marvelous City’ and reinforced his position categorically: “And in Rio, there’s only one (club I’d like to play for), in Rio, there’s only one.” This statement certainly resonated strongly at Gávea and among the ‘Nação Rubro-Negra’ (the red-and-black nation of fans).
Leão also commented on a visit he made to the Corinthians facilities, where he was teased by host Mítico. However, the player dismissed the possibility of playing in São Paulo, citing the colder climate of the capital as a contrast to the heat of Rio de Janeiro.
Rafael Leão’s European Future
While the dream of playing in Brazil remains an aspiration, Rafael Leão‘s career in Europe is currently at a crossroads. According to reports from the Italian newspaper ‘Corriere dello Sport’, Fenerbahçe of Turkey is advancing in negotiations to sign the forward. The Turkish offer is reportedly around 10 million euros per season, a figure that even surpasses the interest from their rivals, Galatasaray.
Despite the financial allure, Leão is acting with caution, preferring to analyze all options calmly. Major clubs from the Premier League (England) and La Liga (Spain) are monitoring the situation closely, though they have yet to submit concrete offers.
AC Milan, the club that holds the player’s rights, is awaiting official bids and is already planning for Leão‘s return for pre-season in Australia. It is worth noting that the forward has previously expressed a desire for new challenges in his career, which adds another layer of uncertainty to his future. Nevertheless, Flamengo fans continue to hope that one day, his desire to play in Brazil will materialize—and perhaps, at Gávea.
